Energy and Emissions Research Lab

Our lab conducts interdisciplinary research within the general areas of fluid mechanics, combustion, thermodynamics, and laser diagnostics with applications focussed on pollution quantification and mitigation in the upstream energy industry.  We collaborate closely with National Research Council and Natural Resources Canada and draw research support from several diverse sources including the World Bank Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR), Natural Resources Canada, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Environment Canada, Petroleum Technology Alliance of Canada (PTAC), and United Nations Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC).  Some of our current projects include:

  • Quantification of gas and particulate phase emissions from oil-field flares
  • Analysis of emissions impacts from hydrofractured tight gas and tight oil development
  • Development and deployment of novel sky-LOSA technology to measure black carbon emissions from flares in the field
  • Novel approaches for detection of fugitive emissions in industrial environments
  • Techno-economic analysis of flaring and venting mitigation potential
  • Novel optical diagnostics for measuring volatile organic compound emissions from liquid storage tanks
  • Flame propagation in stratified mixtures
  • Stabilization of ultra-lean flames for NOx emissions reduction
